Just 1 question when you say "Content masking using CSS or JavaScript is absolutely a 'no no'. " What about hidden/non-hidden layers used for better user experience (layer deployed on mouse over, drop down menu for category,) - Not sure how google can make any diference between content hidden for SEO purpose and content hidden for better user experience...

I'm not sure if its 100% true but there some truths in it that can't be discarded. Lets see how domain experts think of it. They need to test.

I too tested a few keywords based on your analysis and found truth with a few keywords while majority of my targeted kps remain unaffected. Let's see if your analysis gets some more verification!

To me, this is more sensible and user friendly even for visually challenged users.

The purpose of the alt tag is to let a search bot and a blind person understand what your image is about. IT also provides information about your image to people who have, for whatever reason, turned images off in their browser. It's not keyword stuffing to support a good reader experience for all people.

If you want to know whether what you're doing on a page can be considered spammy, ask yourself whether there is a good reason for the action.

Keep your images tagged, folks!

1. If CMS has no option to add 'caption' for many, its time to revamp the CMS. If you want to keep pace with changing dynamics of technology upon which your web business is based.

2. Rephrase versions do help but they implicitly intent 'repetition' as many websites are practicing this. I cited the examples of those websites such as The Hindu and The Times of India

My analysis says that Alt Tags in HTML is old cake to have. See specs of HTML-5 and read the evolving concept of Micro-format to understand the insights for the article I updated on my blog.

Although you contesting on the value of Alt Tag looks valid in a way, I would not understand it in a rather different way.

1. For those which are not Blogger, Alt Tags still hold weight as Captions are not an option available on all platforms.
2. In those places, where there is a provision for both the Caption and AltTags as in Wordpress.com, its best to start practicing having rephrased versions of the same Alt Tag in the Caption (or vice versa). This will certainly alow the Search spiders to look at the two word strings in a different way.
3. Now it is important to frame two complete 'sentences' as AltTags or Captions to make sense to Google or any Search engine, so that it does not look Spammy.

Do let me know your opinion on this.

Munaj, one question... Since Schmidt decided on monetizing search and thus ad words, has made SEO's world over dream of Google instead of their GF/BF... do you think in todays world of FB and Twitter, "Page" would be able to create a product (and be able to monetize it as well), so that SEO's continue dreaming about Google...

Thing is that web has proclivity of finding a genius every other day... Once Bill, Brin & Page, now Zuckerberg.... so even if Page and Brin or any one comes in... Web and tech per se has another genius in offing which would come in and make there product idea life partners of SEO in reality and dream both..

So Page or Brin by the nature of web would not be able to recreate that magic...

Google instants has been running for a little while now. Our SEO company has found that the initial concerns of instants have not come to fruition and that people are still using organic clicks. This may not be the same across the world but it is here in the UK. I think Google shoudl concentrate on algorithmic changes and not on whims like instants. This way we might not all have to change clients web sites every five minutes to accomodate SERPS!
