On March 2009, Matt Cutts while addressing a question – ‘whether SEO will exist in 5 years’ says that SEO will exist in next 5 years. He further says ‘you don’t need to be SEO expert but if you know the free guidelines of SEO, as released by Google’ it would be sufficient because SEO can help you to put your best face on your website. Contrary to his optimistic reply, I would say many companies, in future, would not hire SEO professional due to growing awareness and DIY approach. As I said previously, the career of SEO poses a great risk and you need to explore in-depth of online marketing. Today, SEO and SEM are considered as the mainstream channels in online marketing but down the years, it will not.
The way trends are moving and the way digital technology is advancing, I clearly see not a promising future of SEO. In order to survive in a career of digital marketing, you need to update your skill sets stretching from SEO, SEM, Social Media, web analytics to much more. While SEO as a career is a good decision to start now but survival needs expansion of your knowledge horizon in digital space.
The rise of social media, the growing need for social ecommerce, the changing dynamics of search algorithm, transition from web 2.0 to web 3.0, changes pattern of users behavior in seeking digital information, semantic behavior of search engines etc are enough indications that users’ behavior in searching information is changing from single channel (say Google) to social and specific sites.
In short, SEO will exist in 5 years but not SEO service solely on Google, Yahoo & Bing. Stay update on digital technology and always use new platform to market. This can minimize your career risk of online/digital marketing.
