Social Media Introduces a New Role in Digital Marketing – Will It Last Longer?

The rapid innovation in digital world brought to by social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube bookmarking etc. is redefining the marketing strategies inclined more towards social. The social buzz is already out and many B2B and B2C businesses have embraced it on mainstream marketing. This has paved a way for a new profile ‘social media marketer’ (SMM). Will it longer last?

Indeed, any invention and innovation creates new position in industry. Until, 2-3 yrs back, there were tons of SEO firms and agencies offering their services. Now, the growth of social media companies/agencies is thriving up. I’m seeing seasonal spring up of many in-house agencies that stake claim to provide service in social media. Even, many SEO agencies added social media service in their profile to go with the winds. 


Whether social media is boom or bane, I don’t get into this argument. But one thing that I clearly see is a rapid growth of social media, bullish outlook of investors, and acceptance of social media in mainstream marketing by verticals. Even though, social media’s growth will not be as high as now yet the position of social media marketer created out of necessity may exist but in a different form. Not sure, any company will hire dedicated SMM just like SEO in today's digital space.

In my opinion, seeking career exclusively in social media or providing niche services in social media may not be lucrative in coming days but yes today they are. Social media will remain as a value added service in digital marketing just like SEO and PPC. Survival demands the whole amass of knowledge including writing skills combined with technical knowhow of SEO, SMO, PPC and Web Analytics. The new role introduced by social media boom may soon soothe and settle.
